Portrait of... me?

The Jargon File is a well-known concise description of hacker language and culture. It's been around a while and I've browsed it before, but I happened to stumble across it again today. Some of the content is a bit obscure since it dates back a couple decades or more. But perhaps the most fascinating and continually relevant section is the Portrait of J. Random Hacker. (You do know what a hacker is, right?) Many of the descriptions are eerily accurate when applied to myself -- much more than any horoscope could ever be. Until I read the Jargon File a few years ago, I didn't quite realize how much I conform to the nonconformist hacker nature.

Of course not everything can be completely on the mark. But there are a surprising number of striking examples, including...

Dress: "A substantial minority prefers 'outdoorsy' clothing"

I think around 90% of the clothing I wear comes from REI.

Sports: "Interest in spectator sports is low to non-existent; sports are something one does, not something one watches on TV."

Absolutely.

... "Ultimate Frisbee has become quite popular."

My favorite sport!

... "Martial arts in the hacker culture deserves special mention."

I've dabbled in a few martial arts and always wanted to do more. I've been planning for a couple years now to take up aikido more seriously, but I just don't have the time to add another frequent activity to my schedule.

Food: "Ethnic. Spicy. Oriental, esp. Chinese and most esp. Szechuan, Hunan, and Mandarin (hackers consider Cantonese vaguely déclassé). A visible minority of Southwestern and Pacific Coast hackers prefers Mexican."

Mmm... Mexican, Japanese, and Chinese food are indeed my favorites. But as it says, I never much cared for Cantonese (once I figured out the difference).

Communication: "Though hackers often have poor person-to-person communication skills, they are as a rule quite sensitive to nuances of language and very precise in their use of it."

I constantly find myself cringing when my co-workers (mostly the non-hacker ones of course) repeatedly miss-apply or miss-speak colloquial phrases. Some of them even grew up in this country so they should know better. And in some cases those misuses seem to catch on and grow into a widespread meme, annoying me to no end. Personally I almost always avoid silly colloquialisms and just say what I mean.

... "They are often better at writing than at speaking."

Well, I try. If my writing is bad, my speech must be horrid.

Personality: "Also, most hackers are ‘neophiles’, stimulated by and appreciative of novelty (especially intellectual novelty)."

Old stuff is obsolete. People who resist good changes for the sake of familiarity or pointless tradition annoy me.

... "Hackers are ‘control freaks’ in a way that has nothing to do with the usual coercive or authoritarian connotations of the term."

I insist on driving a stick-shift. I wired my house with programmable light switches.

Misc: "Hackers are more likely to have cats than dogs."

Check.

"Richer hackers drive spiffy RX-7s..."

Oops, an off-by-one error! Obviously the Jargon File needs to be updated for the current decade.

"... and then forget to have them washed."

Guilty.

---

Lots of other things there are not far off, but I may not be prepared to admit everything. So, for fellow hackers, does much of this ring true for you? As for everyone else... just know that we do not envy your normalcy. :)

Coon meets coon

Merlin made a new friend.

Last night around 1:30am I heard a loud ruckus in the vertical blinds of my back patio door. (Fortunately since it was a Saturday night I was still up -- in fact I'd just gotten home.) Usually this noise means Merlin has gotten excited because a neighborhood cat has come around to say hello. But this time, my Maine Coon met another kind of coon.

Coon meets coon (1) Coon meets coon (2)

This was a very bold and curious raccoon, because he didn't back off at all when I came up to the window and started snapping pictures with the flash. At first, both cat and coon took aggressive stances, hissing and clawing at each other through the window. But after a few minutes, they sat down and just stared at each other for at least a half hour. Merlin even started purring!

The new Bellevue boom

If you've been to downtown Bellevue, WA in the past six months, or even driven by on I-405, you noticed the literally dozens of high-rise cranes in the area -- even more than there ever were in the .com boom days around 1999-2000. If you're wondering what are all those major projects under construction now, this page has a good overview.

Random thought for the day

Even if you could train a giraffe to roller-skate, he'll never win the limbo competition.

TV news story about my high school

Tulsa KOTV channel 6 aired a profile of OSSM a few days ago. Check it out online at kotv.com.

Things there have changed a lot since I was part of OSSM's fifth class, graduating in '96. At that time the campus had only the one remodeled old school building -- the new dorms, library, science building, gym, and surrounding iron fence were all added since. Instead, we had a twice-daily 45-minute bus ride and some freedom to roam the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Most students agree we had the better deal back then, since any kind of freedom is cherished by a teenager.

OSSM was an incredible experience for me. I never worked that hard in my life before or since, and probably never will again. It was interesting not only academically, but socially. What do you get when you take 150 extremely bright teenagers out of their mostly-rural Oklahoma towns, put them in a small bubble, and apply extreme stress for two years?

Looking back, it almost reminds me of a contrived reality TV show. There are some precocious personalities, quirky quiet types, big egos, and amazing talents, all in a competitive and very enclosed environment. All you need are cameras in every room... which they might actually have by now, as I hear the administration is getting more strict every year. Perhaps there's a fundraising opportunity? :)

But seriously, I don't want to give a bad impression. For all the good times and bad, I still remember it as being the best two years of my life. And I truly believe that I could not have been as successful as I am today without my OSSM experience.

Crazy math

If you like pi, you may find it astounding that (92+192/22)1/4 = 3.14159265 ! Really.

CS humor

Warning: these comics might make little sense to those without a Computer Science degree. But I find them hilarious.

Completely ordinary adventures

Well, I was leaving a pretty good trail of bytes there, without a blog-free month for nearly a year and a half. And then apparently there came a time of Nothing Terribly Interesting Happening in Jason's Life.

You don't believe me? Well, I did go to Las Vegas around my birthday, just like last year. Puget Sound had a freak windstorm last month that felled a 90-foot tree onto my mailbox and left me (and a million others) without power for about 5 days -- but you knew about that already. 2007 arrived, but I expect most of you noticed that too. I still keep in shape with a lot of racquetball, occasional indoor soccer, and some very energetic swing dancing.

Don't misinterpret me here: I'm not bored. I'm just concerned you might be.

One less tooth

I had my left bottom wisdom tooth removed an hour ago. It had just barely surfaced above the gums, and was starting to get a cavity since it didn't get brushed well. (My other three wisdom teeth are still hidden below the gums, causing no problems yet.) I've heard that getting wisdom teeth removed can be a majorly painful procedure involving general anesthesia, but my dentist promised that in my case it would be quick and easy, only needing local anasthetic and 10 minutes in the dentist chair. He wasn't exaggerating either. It took longer to administer the shot of anesthetic than it did to actually remove the tooth. Once the left half of my mouth was numb, he just reached in and somehow pulled out the tooth quite easily. I thought he was only getting started when he announced he was done after a only few seconds.

So now I have a hole in the back of my mouth, and the left side of my face is numb, but otherwise I'm feeling fine. We'll see how I feel after the anesthetic wears off...

Anyway, if you're looking for a dentist in the area, I've had great experiences with Dr. Chris Farac for the past 5 years.

Sun, sun, and after that, some more sun!

The weather forecast for Bellevue shows nothing but glorious sunshine for the next 10 days! (At the time of this posting...)

It should be perfect for playing lots of ultimate!

10-year hometown high school reunion

This past weekend I flew back to Oklahoma for a few days to attend my 10-year hometown high school reunion in Stigler, Oklahoma. I almost didn't go, since I'm living so far away now and I haven't kept in touch with any of those people. But I'm glad I did, because it was a lot of fun.

I didn't actually graduate with those people -- instead for my last two years I went off to OSSM -- so it had really been 12 years for me. Everyone recognized me easily since I look almost the same as I did when I was 16. I'll take that as a good thing, compared to how some people have changed. I think they were all a bit shocked when I sang karaoke (rather well!) in front of everyone, something the shy quiet guy they used to know absolutely never would have done. My third number ("Sold!" by John Michael Montgomery -- yes, it's country) was a big hit, enough to get the former head cheerleader (now a doctor, and not a little drunk) dancing up there beside me.

Overall it was an interesting experience. I got to reconnect with a few old friends, and with others exchange more words than we probably ever did in high school. Attendance was pretty good, though there were several people missing who I would have really liked to see again.

Why am I up so early on Sunday morning?

I'm doing an 8K run this morning -- the annual Seattle "Beat the Bridge" run which benefits juvenile diabetes research.

Rommate swap

Crissy, a friend who has been renting a room in my house for the past 7 months, just moved out to go live with her fiancé.

Saeed, another friend, is about to move in.

Inspired by actual events

I woke this morning at a leisurely pace
Reluctant to rise at dawn
And with a great stretch of feline grace
The cat did catch my yawn

Thanksgiving feast

Thursday I had a Thanksgiving Day feast at my place along with a few of my friends who stayed in town. We all cooked and baked in my kitchen from about 10:30am until the big meal around 4:00pm. Everyone made a lot of very delicious food. Saeed and Jean cooked a 13lb turkey to perfection, and we had plenty of traditional and nontraditional sides and desserts. Personally I made candied sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, red applesauce, and oatmeal-craisin cookies. All those things came out great except the cookies -- next time I'm going back to the recipe on the can of Quaker Oats!

I don't have any pictures of all the food, because it wouldn't all fit on the table. Pictured below (clockwise from left) are Crissy, Vijay, Jean, Saeed, and an empty plate that would be filled shortly by a late-arriving Mike.

Obligatory cat photos

Cats are never the most willing subjects, but I needed someone to pose while I tried out my new camera. I at least managed a couple decent shots among all the throwaways.

This is Merlin. He is a 5 year old pure-bred Maine Coon. You don't get a good sense of scale from these pictures, but just think of an ordinary cat and then double it. He weighs over 20 pounds (9kg), and is not at all fat.

Crissy (Vijay's fiance who rents a room in my house) will be taking care of Merlin while I'm away on vacation.

Game night or party night?

For about four months running, I have attended a regular "game night" gathering every Monday night at Brandon's house. I always enjoy these gatherings, and they make Mondays a little less dull. Initially, it was roughly five of us guys wanting to explore some of the more interesting and strategic board games in Brandon's closet. It was a nice casual evening where I could bring a Qdoba burrito, relax, and enjoy some friendly semi-competitive board-gaming, with people who aren't scared of learning a few rules. And it was relatively quiet, except of course when Josh got excited about, well, anything.

Recently, the nature of this event has been gradually changing. Maybe the word got out about Brandon's homemade gourmet desserts. Or maybe someone invited a couple women, thus making it acceptable for more women to come, resulting in more guys coming only for the change of scenery. Regardless of what is drawing them, if attendance keeps increasing at the current exponential rate, Brandon will soon have to worry about violating local fire codes -- especially if he doesn't control the stampede into the kitchen when dessert is announced.

When you get that many people in one place, the dynamic changes significantly. It's no longer possible to really focus on a good strategic board game anymore, with all the distractions of people coming and going and the impoliteness of ignoring everyone not at the table for two hours while you compete to build the most efficient rail network the European subcontinent has never seen. Instead, we end up playing more party games, which involve zero strategy but certainly a lot more laughter.

Please don't misinterpret me here -- I am not complaining, merely observing. I actually enjoy being social and meeting new people, much more than my mostly quiet demeanor might lead one to believe. I still have a good time every Monday night. I guess I just miss "the old days" a little.

How to beat Seattle traffic

Yesterday after work I was playing ultimate on the campus sports fields (which by the way have been replaced with very nice artificial turf since that arial photo was taken), when a helicopter swooped in and landed in the baseball outfield next to us. A few minutes later, who else but Bill comes walking over from his office, gets in, and flies off. Okay, so it wasn't a huge event. But he certainly doesn't commute that way every day. I expect he had an important appoinment to get to, and trying to get anywhere by limo around 6pm in Puget Sound rush hour traffic is mostly futile.

What have I been up to?

It's been far too long since I've posted. Mostly that's just because there hasn't been much interesting to talk about. My time has been divided between work, sports, and my house.

At work, my direct manager is on an extended vacation out of the country, and all development resrources on my project besides me have been diverted away to other tasks. In a way I guess it is good because it gives me more responsibility. But mostly it just means I have more work.

In sports, I'm still playing ultimate and racquetball. My ultimate team doesn't have a really great record this season. But I think I know our problem -- we are too dedicated. We have a pretty consistent showing of 9-10 players who are all competent but mostly not outstanding. Other teams seem to have trouble fielding a full team of 7, so they pickup players who just happen to be hanging around the field. Of course, those are the people who play all the time and are always very good! And there you have my weak excuse for our poor 2-5-1 (w-l-t) record so far. There are just two games left in the season, one starting in 15 minutes.

At my house, I finally unpacked the last of my moving boxes this past weekend. And my HD Windows Media Center PC is working pretty well, projecting on a 12-foot wide screen in the basement. Just to finish it off I made velvet curtains to surround the screen. It's quite an impressive sight. I have some nice leather reclining chairs on order, but it will take them several weeks to get here. Until then the beanbags on the floor work well enough.

Oh, and I went hiking at Paradise, Mt Ranier a week ago. I'll try to post some photos here when I get a chance.

Hello? Is anyone listening?

So I've started a blog. I always meant to setup some kind of web presence for myself, but never did much about it. We'll see how this goes.

Most of what you'll see here initially will be tales of my (mis)adventures in the home-buying process, including pictures. But I'll also try to bore you with other anecdotes of my life.
